Top 10 Healthy Diet Tips

Posted in Nutrition

Experts agree that the key to success lies in the three magical words: Measure, Balance, and Variety. Below you will find the top 10 basic tips that promise to help you keep a healthy diet, without saying good-bye to the pleasures of eating.

1. Eat a variety of all food groups.

There is not a single food that provides us with all of our necessary nutrients. Therefore, make sure to eat a variety of foods from different groups to meet all your nutritional needs.

2. Regularly eat fruits, vegetables, and wholegrain foods.

Include at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables into your diet every day. These foods (along with carbohydrates) are the basis of a fiber-rich diet.

3. Maintain a healthy weight.

The ideal weight for each of us depends on many factors including gender, height, age and genes. If your weight fluctuates constantly, seek the help of a nutritional expert.

4. Accurate serving sizes.

Eating reasonable amounts of food at meals allows us to enjoy all of the foods that we like without harming our health with unnecessary calories.

5. Eat small & frequent meals.

Skipping meals can lead to uncontrollable hunger and trigger food binges, and can also make us more vulnerable to temptations. For this reason, take care to break up the energy needed daily into 5 meals, spreading them out at regular intervals throughout the day.

6. Reduce consumption of high-calorie foods.

Most people eat for pleasure instead of nourishment. If your favorite foods are high in fat, sugar and/or salt, then make sure you stay aware of how much and how often you indulge. It’s a good idea to set limits for yourself, such as one scoop of ice cream, once a week. Learn about the role of KCAL in loosing weight.

7. Balance is key.

There is no need to try to make each meal perfect. If you overdo the fat, sugar, or salt in one meal, make sure your next meal is lighter in the same way – so as to “make amends” for your overindulgence. This way you will balance your total daily intake.

8. Self-observation is important.

To be able to improve your eating habits, you first need to identify what you do well. Self-monitoring - or, in other words, simply recording your meals can be a very helpful tool.

9. Gradual changes work best.

There are no "super foods" or easy solutions for a healthy diet. Do not expect your eating habits to change overnight. Abrupt changes can (sometimes) help you achieve your goal quickly, but a gradual change in your eating habits is the only way to ensure you will maintain these changes.

10. Good and bad foods.

There are no good or bad foods! Try to improve your overall diet and do not waste time experimenting with dieting fads that will lead you nowhere. All foods are allowed as part of a balanced diet, as long as you eat in moderation.
