4 beauty spring clean ideas

Dewy lawns, sun-drenched skies and fresh, blooming flowers; spring brings more energy than any other season. And after a long, cold winter, you might just start to feel like you’re coming back to life, too. But months of dried-out skin, chapped lips and frizzy locks can take their toll - so we’ve pulled together our favourite all-natural DIY beauty treatments for a total spring rejuvenation.

Treat yourself and your body right

Get your glow back

It’s time to, quite literally, shed your winter skin. Homemade exfoliating scrubs can be wonderfully effective at clearing up dry patches on your body that inevitably appear during the frosty months and giving you a fresh, hydrated look.

How to do it:

  1. For a silky smooth body, mix three tablespoons of virgin, unrefined coconut oil with half a cup of sugar.
  2. Apply the mixture to your body while in the shower, using your hands to scrub it into your skin for an intensive treatment.
  3. Rinse off with warm water.

Make your hair happy

Your hair is probably the biggest victim of the chilly months - exposed to harsh elements and no doubt feeling a little dry and malnourished. Forget store-bought masks, make your own treatment to bring those shiny, glossy follicles back just in time for spring. A hugely overlooked hair reviver is a good old egg yolk - full of fats and proteins to bring your hair back to life.

How to do it:

  1. Chop up half an avocado and one egg yolk, then blitz them up in a blender.
  2. In the shower, apply the mixture to your damaged hair, working up from the ends to your scalp.
  3. Wrap your hair in a shower cap and wait for 15-20 minutes for the ingredients to do their work (this is the perfect time to apply your homemade exfoliating scrub!).
  4. Rinse, then shampoo and condition.

Wave dry feet goodbye

The wellies are coming off and the sandals are slowly slipping back on. But once you ditch the thick socks and release your bare feet, you’ll probably feel like they need a little love to get them back to their former glory.

How to do it:

  1. First, soak your feet in warm water to soften the skin. Try throwing some Epsom salts into the water and a few drops of lavender essential oil for a soothing treat.
  2. Once your feet are clean and dry, moisturise with some simple homemade foot cream, focussing on sandpaper-like spots (usually your heels and soles). Everyday Roots have shared a super-easy remedy using milk, honey and orange juice that you can try - if you can get someone to give you a foot massage with it, even better.

Brush up your detox game

If you’re going to purchase one product for your at-home beauty makeover, make it a dry brush. These soft-but-firm brushes are invaluable at aiding your skin’s detox for a fresh spring look: they eliminate dead skin cells, minimise cellulite, stimulate the lymph nodes, improve digestion and circulation, and aid the body with its natural detox process.

How to do it:

  1. Using a dry brush, start at your feet and brush upwards towards your heart. Use firm, small strokes (be gentle, you never want to break the skin) or move the brush round in a circular motion.

Dedicate at least three to five minutes brushing your skin everyday. Morning is best as it will energise you for the rest of the day, putting a spring in your step and a healthy glow in your skin.
