5 apps that will change the way you work out

Posted in Fitness

We can work out when we want, how we want, at the time we want and with limited notice. Logging our classes, workouts, diet, sleep and other vitals has never been more simple - and we love the fact all our hard, sweaty work can be shared with Facebook friends.

Ready to join the tech squad? Here’s our edit of the apps that can quite literally change your life - your exercising life, anyway.

1. Holmes Place

What is it? Wellness and fitness from a whole new perspective

Classes, challenges and clubs a-plenty, the Holmes Place app is free and exclusive for members of its health clubs. Registering is a no-fuss affair: simply sign up with your Facebook, Twitter or email account in seconds. Once on your dashboard, you’ll be able to find friends, events and promotions at Holmes Places clubs. Book a class, sign up for a new fitness challenge, download a personalised training plan and monitor all your workout stats in one place.
Compatibility: iPhone (requires iOS 4.3 or later), iPad.

2. Runkeeper

What is it? GPS fitness-tracker, best for mapping runs.

It’s been around for a while now, but Runkeeper is still one of our favourite fitness apps. Runs, walks, bike rides and other workouts are effortlessly simple to monitor using the GPS system in your phone. It even provides high-accuracy, real-time coaching, giving you audible updates on your pace, time, distance, and more. The app is totally free; the satisfaction that comes from finishing off and viewing your run (not to mention sharing it with friends): priceless.
Compatibility: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Android.

3. Pocket Yoga

What is it? Virtual yoga trainer on the go.

While nothing compares to a good yoga class, the great thing about yoga is that you can do it anywhere. Pocket Yoga is a little Yogi bible, filled with more than 200 poses to learn and hone at home, on holiday or even on your lunch break. It’s the small details that make it so lovely; you’ll be prompted when to inhale and exhale and can even unlock zen-filled ‘environments’ as you progress with your practice.
Compatibility: iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Apple Watch, Android.

4. MyFitnessPal

What is it? Personal calorie counter and all-round nutrition guide.
We all know that a solid fitness regime is nothing without a balanced diet and MyFitnessPal is a food journal with a difference. It helps you track your diet and exercise in less than five minutes per day by quickly and simply adding entries (choosing from a database of over 5 million foods). The app also has a recipe importer and a barcode scanner, so you can quickly look up groceries while out shopping. And it works! Members of the app have lost a total of almost 200 million pounds (that’s more than 90 million kgs).
Compatibility: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Android.

5. Interval Timer

What is it? HIIT training made simple.

A must-have for gym junkies. Whether you’re pumping the free weights, heading for a run, taking out the bike or getting sweaty with a punchbag, Interval Timer is a nifty little app specifically designed for tracking work/rest periods during workouts. Customise the app to whatever specific intervals you need, assign playlists to workouts and share your hard work on Facebook or Twitter. Plus, it’s free!
Compatibility: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Android.
